Those who have been locked out of using contact lenses due to irregularities in the cornea now have nothing to worry about. With scleral gas-permeable contact lenses as an alternative to wearing eyeglasses, you will be able to experience clearer and healthier vision without issue. These lenses are specially designed to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the sclera, or the ‘white of the eyes’, creating a smooth optical surface that corrects vision problems.

Scleral Contact Lens

But in order to get the most of scleral contact lenses, you will need to use and take care of them properly. The premier specialist in corneal reshaping technology, Excel Eyecare OD PA, shares a few helpful do’s and don’ts.

  • DO make sure to use only the solution prescribed by your eye doctor. Using any other fluid (even plain tap water) to clean or lubricate your scleral contact lenses can introduce foreign matter and bacteria into your eyes. Not only will this cause discomfort, but it can also lead to infection. By using only the appropriate and prescribed solution, you can avoid these and the costs involved with their treatment.

  • DON’T forget about proper insertion and removal of the lenses. If you are new at using scleral contact lenses, your vision therapy specialist will thoroughly explain and demonstrate how to safely and properly do this. There are a couple of ways to insert and remove these lenses, and you are free to try them out to determine the method you will be most comfortable with.

  • DO wash and dry your hands thoroughly. You will want them clean and dry before inserting or removing your scleral lenses. Make sure to wash all parts of your hands, including between the fingers, then dry them with a clean, lint-free towel. And when inserting or removing the contact lenses, make sure to do it while sitting at a table with another clean, lint-free cloth. Avoid the bathroom since it may contain more bacteria than any other area in the home.

  • DON’T sleep with your scleral lenses still on. Most people can comfortably wear these contact lenses for up to 14 hours at a time. But this may vary with each person. For your greater comfort, try not to wear them longer than is necessary, especially when it’s almost time to turn in for the night. You will want to remove your scleral lenses an hour before going to bed and store them in a clean case.
