The misery of dry eye

You woke up this morning and your eyes were dry again– irritated and inflamed. It’s the same old story – you’ve been using lid scrubs, pharmaceutical solutions, and moisturizing drops and gels for some time now, but your dry eyes continue to bother you. Why doesn’t this misery go away?

What causes dry eye?

A number of factors can contribute to dry eye including age, heating and/or air conditioning, seasonal allergies, prolonged computer use, wind, smoke, dry environments. anxiety medications, pregnancy, menopause, autoimmune disorders, hormone replacement therapy, and laser eye surgery, just to name a few.

Treating dry eye

Dry eyes are a chronic condition caused by lack of lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. It’s very common – you may well be one of the 33% of Americans who suffer from dry eye. Dry eye problems frequently center around the composition of the tear itself.

Tears are composed of three layers

  • the Lipid layer
  • the Aqueous layer
  • the Mucin layer

A problem with any of these layers could cause the tear to break down too quickly. But surprisingly, it is not usually the quantity of tears that is the problem, it is the quality.

Compromised Meibomian Gland function

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction causes an unstable tear film in 86% of all dry eye patients. If you have dry eye, chances are very good that you have Meibomian Gland Disease [MGD].

Unfortunately, MGD is chronic and progressive. If left untreated, your condition will likely worsen and may result in a permanent loss of Meibomian gland function.

The real problem – Meibomian Gland Disease

Tiny glands in your upper and lower eye lids are responsible for secreting a small amount of oil each time you blink. This oil, called meibum, coats the surface of your tears and forms an effective barrier to evaporation – without an adequate supply of meibum, your tears break down too quickly and dry eye occurs.
